Sultan Sosnaliyev was one of the volunteers who joined the Abkhazian resistance on August 15, 1992, only one day after the military aggression of the Georgian army.
Sultan Sosnaliyev was born in Baksan in Kabardino-Balkaria. After graduating from the Syzran Aircraft School and the Zhukov Military Academy, he served in the USSR air force for 29 years and retired in 1990 in the rank of a colonel. Two years after his retirement, he moved to Abkhazia with the volunteers from the Kabardino Balkari Republic to defend the freedom of the Abkhazian people. He was appointed the head of the staff of the State Committee of the Defence, and played a critical role during the liberation of Gagra and Sukhum. He was the minister of defence from 1993 until his return to Kabardino Balkaria in 1996. He came back to Abkhazia in 2005 to become the minister of defence for the second time upon the request of the President of Abkhazia, Sergei Bagapsh. He died on November 22, 2008.
We will always remember, respect, and honor our hero, Sultan Sosnaliyev.
